Taking the bus or renting a car are both viable options for the journey from Split to Dubrovnik. If you’re on a tight budget, opting for the bus can be a cost-effective choice. However, if you’re weighing the value of the added expense of a rental car, it’s worth considering the advantages it offers.
During our one-way trip, we opted to rent a car, a decision I’m thrilled about in retrospect.
The total cost, including gas, came to $185, compared to $75 for three of us taking the bus. This $110 difference allowed us the freedom and flexibility to make spontaneous stops along the way. These prices are based on our trip in September 2023. Good deals on rental cars can be found here.

Renting a car opens up the opportunity to take the scenic coastal route D8 from Split to Dubrovnik, despite your GPS possibly suggesting the faster freeway option.
The coastal route, though slightly longer, offers breathtaking views that make the journey memorable. Plan for a travel time of approximately 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic conditions, without factoring in stops.
As you travel, you’ll encounter numerous pull-off spots where you can pause and soak in the stunning scenery. We took a break at a spot called Rastplatz und Fotoplattform, captivated by the panoramic view.
Having your own vehicle also means you can indulge in a leisurely lunch en route.
I recommend stopping at Makarska Beach and trying out one of the local eateries. After a satisfying meal, take a refreshing break by the beach or plunge into the clear waters for a swim!
While a rental car isn’t a necessity for this journey, the freedom it provides and the cost comparison with the bus make it a compelling option. If you value flexibility and the opportunity to customize your travel experience, I highly recommend renting a car for your journey from Split to Dubrovnik.
