Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination that often finds its way onto everyone’s Croatian itinerary. Undoubtedly, the allure of its beauty, coupled with its prominent role in Game of Thrones, has contributed to its widespread recognition. Below are my top recommendations of things to do in Dubrovnik.
How long should you stay in Dubrovnik?
I recommend allocating at least two full days to Dubrovnik if you’re not venturing on day trips. This timeframe allows ample opportunity to explore all the city’s major highlights.
Where should you stay in Dubrovnik?
While staying within the city walls of Old Town may seem appealing, I suggest opting for accommodation outside this area.
Dubrovnik’s fame often translates to crowds, and staying slightly removed from the city center offers a break from the hustle. Moreover, the surrounding hills offer stunning vistas just a short walk away from Old Town.
What are the best things to do in Dubrovnik?
Walk the city walls
Take a leisurely stroll along the historic city walls of Dubrovnik. Take in the architectural wonders, or pause for a drink at one of the charming restaurants en route.
I highly recommend avoiding midday hours due to the lack of shade (and the inevitable crowds). Opt for mornings or evenings for a more enjoyable experience. I noticed some savvy visitors carrying umbrellas for shade, a clever move!
It’s essential to note that each ticket allows only one entry/exit. While you don’t have to complete the full loop, plan your route accordingly. We purchased our tickets here, which also granted us discounted access to Fort Lovrjenac.
Explore Fort Lovrjenac
Situated atop a hill across from the City Walls, Fort Lovrjenac provides a stunning viewpoint of Dubrovnik’s walls and the town below.
Its role as a Game of Thrones filming location, like many others in the area, adds to its appeal. Nevertheless, don’t miss the chance to visit Fort Lovrjenac for its remarkable views and historical significance.
Relax at Banje Beach
If you’re visiting Dubrovnik during the warmer months, I highly recommend escaping the heat and crowds by heading to Banje Beach for a refreshing dip. This beach offers a unique setting with a picturesque view of the city walls while you unwind on the beach.
If you get hungry, Banje Beach Restaurant is a convenient stop for snacks, drinks, and even the option to rent umbrellas and chairs!
Ascend Mount Srđ
Perched at about 1,350 feet overlooking Old Town, Mount Srđ offers a captivating panorama of Dubrovnik.
At the summit, you’ll discover a fortress, a cross, a war museum, a restaurant (the charming Restaurant Panorama), a 360-degree viewpoint, and thrilling activities such as ziplining. The visit is an absolute must, primarily for the breathtaking views.
There are multiple ways to reach the summit, including hiking, taking the cable car, or driving. We opted for a scenic hike up and a leisurely cable car ride down, a combination that provided the best of both worlds.
Tickets for the cable car can be conveniently purchased here. If you prefer hiking, simply input ‘Mount Srđ-hiking tours’ in your navigation to find the starting point.
try all the restaurants
There are too many great restaurants in Dubrovnik to list them all. We went to a few, but two of our favorites are the following:
- Konoba Pjatanca: If you are looking for a traditional Croatian meal, head here. They have a few traditional dishes to choose from, including their ‘Lamb under the Bell Peka’. This is a traditional dish that is cooked over the course of a few hours. For this dish, you need to order at least three hours in advance, so be sure to call ahead!
- Taj Mahal: This restaurant serves traditional Bosnian cuisine. The dishes are unique, the meat is cooked wonderfully, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. Well worth a stop if you are wanting a fun twist of flavors. Just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time via their website.
go to an orchestra
Nearly every night, there is an orchestra playing somewhere within the city walls of Dubrovnik. If you enjoy live music, I would recommend attending. The violinist, in particular, was one of the best we have witnessed.
visit lokrum island
Lokrum Island is a short 15-20 minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik. With ferries running frequently each day, it is very easily accessible for a day trip.
On the island, you can hike, explore the Botanical Garden, or spot a peacock or two. Another fun alternative is to rent a kayak to get to Lokrum Island.
take a game of thrones tour
If you are a die-hard fan of Game of Thrones, I would recommend taking a guided tour.
We loved watching the show, but opted out of doing one of these. Instead, I googled fun Game of Thrones facts prior to walking Dubrovnik on our own, which was good enough for us!
