We loved Skellig Ring so much during our Ring of Kerry trip (see recommendations the Ring of Kerry here!), that we returned for a second visit to explore its charms even further.
From its top spots to hidden gems, below you will find our recommendations and honest opinions on how to make the most of this wonderful corner of Ireland.
KERRY CLIFFS
#1 on this list is undoubtedly the Kerry Cliffs. These cliffs are our preference over any others we have seen in Ireland. They have a more remote, lesser-known feel to them with a uniqueness that has become my happy place.
Note: Confirm hours when planning your trip, as they vary by season and day. During our last visit, we were surprised they closed at 5:30 PM.
COOMANASPIC PASS
This pass is located right up a hill near the Kerry Cliffs. If you are already in the area, it is worth driving up to see the beauty from a higher viewpoint.
SKELLIG MICHAEL LANDING/ECO TOUR
Skellig Michael is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are two ways to visit the island – the Landing Tour or the Eco Tour.
The Landing Tour allows you to hike Skellig Michael, whereas the Eco Tour is a boat ride that circles the island. If the Landing Tour is something you are interested in, be sure to book weeks in advance. They only allow a certain number of people a day on the island, and tickets run out quickly.
Once you obtain the Landing Tour tickets, I recommend not getting your hopes up. The Landing Tour can get canceled due to weather, causing you to miss your opportunity (this is what happened to us).
The Eco Tour does not need to be booked in advance and is another way to see the island. While some people recommend the Eco Tour, my honest opinion is that it is overrated. It is nearly a 3-hour round trip journey to circle an island. I still hope that I can do the Landing Tour one day, but I can’t say I would recommend the Eco Tour.
DRIFTWOOD SURF CAFE
If you are looking for a place to eat in the area, I highly recommend Driftwood Surf Cafe. In addition to the delicious food, it features large glass windows that overlook the ocean and an ambiance that can relax anyone.
SKELLIGS CHOCOLATE AND CAFE
Skelligs Chocolate and Cafe is a staple on the Skellig Ring. If you like chocolate, it is worth a stop to taste the different chocolates and maybe grab a bag to go.
Geokaun Mountain and Cliffs
On Valentia Island, there are some lesser-known overlooks/cliffs at Geokaun Mountain and Cliffs. These are accessible by car and also have hiking paths with signs on the history of the area. It’s worth a stop for more beautiful views.
BRAY HEAD WALK
The Bray Head walk is an easy 4.5 km round trip walk to the Bray Head Signal Tower at the edge of Valentia Island. It is a peaceful walk with panoramic views. When we went we were the only ones there!
